From the Archive Part II....British & Portuguese

All 1/72, mostly plastics but with a few metal chaps from Newline Designs. There are some head swaps to create a unit of British Light Dragoons with Tarleton - British Horse artillery crew heads combined with bodies from French Hussars.

I hope you enjoy them, they were fun to paint:

These three units contain combinations of metal & plastic figures

This particular Horse artillery stand was painted by my friend the Red Rajah.

There are a few Napoleonic figures that I painted in my son's collection, perhaps we can take some photos of those too.

  1. Oooh, but they're shiney! And sitting in a box downstairs!

Thanks John, very, very generous, and very, very cool!

    1. Shiny satin varnish is what does it - still not sure if they wouldn't look better with a spray of Testors Dullcoat? I've been pondering what varnish to use with the 15mm Napoleonics I've been painting.

      You're most welcome Nick.

When do you go on Holiday to Oz? I'll be heading to QLD later this month for a few days.

    2. We had to can the trip - couldn't afford it in the end. An unexpected change in estimated income turned it from marginal to not possible...

Lost a bucket of [mortgage] money on non refundable air fares as the change only materialised a couple of days after booking flights!

    3. Oh, and I meant shiney as in the Firefly use of the word - cool, great stuff etc.

  2. I like your light dragoons! Are they Italeri French hussars with tarletons? I'd never have thought of doing that!

Yes, Italeri French Hussars with Heads from their British Horse Artillery set - seems to work well.

  5. Those are really nice! I wouldn't have been able to sell them but then I still I have my Airfix Napoleonics from the late 1970s. What figures are the British Highlanders and how did Newline fit in with the plastics? I feel that they are a bit small but could be persuaded.

    1. Thanks.
The Highlanders are a combination of the older Italeri set and Newline Designs figures. I put an extra piece of card under the bases of the Newline figures to give them a height boost, as you are correct they are somewhat shorter. Interestingly, their Portuguese were bigger figures and fitted in much better with the plastics, it seems there is some variation within their ranges.

  6. Very nicely presented armies, Jacksarge. I think I see Airfix, ESCI and Italieri represented there - I daresay there are others? I have long felt that where Airfix figures often (though not always) have an individual charm, ESCI and Italieri shine in the look of completed battalions and squadrons as a whole. Mind you Italieri at their best are superb, anyhow.

  9. Fantastic! Seriously nice stuff. Even the Hat British lights, which I thought wouldn't come up well, have been vindicated by your painting technique. Excellent...I shall pursue my Brits now with renewed vigour.

They have all moved on now to my Kiwi friend Nick.

Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I will be putting up some pics of recent 15mm efforts.
